Artist Bio

On his lyrical mission, Spellbinder has seen and felt the wrath of the Babylon system in a time when Rasta man or natty dreadlocks man was considered a dangerous and hostile individual, and to this he put a voice. He was inspired to drop musical truth about his love for Jah and his struggle against the system so that all would understand. From behind many microphones he has sung out of respect for all living creatures and for the complete unification of every man & woman of every color and race.

Dedicated in bringing a new form of Roots reggae to the dancehall and beyond, Spellbinder is conjuring a sound that will stand on it’s own and bring this message to the people. From Seattle to Brooklyn to Denver, the Binder’ has versed many a tale and performed live alongside such artists as Shaggy, Ziggy Marley, Krs-one, Don Carlos, The Wailers, Steele Pulse, Midnite, Luciano and many others.

Besides his E.P. release, the Binder’ will be making guest appearance on the new infinite minds album as well as releasing his new self titled album

As his path grows wider, his voice gets stronger, no hiding in the shadows for this warrior, Spellbinder goes one on one with system corruption.

Spellbinder has been skateboarding since 1980.  He skateboarded pro amateur from 1990-1994 with Alva Skateboards.  He entered numerous contests with people who are at the top of their game today (Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Ron Allen, Steve Steadham)

Spellbinder still skateboards today, at 40 years old.  It helps with his breathing in vocals.  He is a true athlete.  This increases his health, happiness and performance on stage.

Spellbinder used to perform every Tuesday at Kokopelli's restaurant and bar in Denver, Colorado.  This was for about 2 years before Kokopelli's closed.  Every Tuesday it was packed, like Saturday night packed.  It was Denver's longest weekly Reggae event in history.  He shared the stage with numerous artists such as Tito Dell Barrio Malaga, the Flo Bots, Shatta-I, International Dub Squad (the band that used to back Spellbinder), Ebony Lyon, Melissa Ivy, Tempa and the Tantrums.  Spellbinder also used to perform in the Hip Hop field with Lokon (A Latino Denver Rapper).  Spellbinder's concept is to play multiple styles of music, in all forms to unite the people in one love in many forms of music.

Kokopelli's moved Spellbinder to Friday nights, a more competitive market night for entertainment...

This (scans below) was during the time Spellbinder was playing almost every night all around Denver.  He was contracted by VANS Shoes and Fresh Jive Clothing Company to perform at 10 different RAVES all around the city of Denver in one month's time.  Most of the parties where held where the current Rockies Stadium (Coor's Field) is today.  This was Old Denver.  The interview's mainly discuss his skateboarding career, his love for music, and his cause.  His cause is universal unification, spiritual consciousness and unity among all people.

This photo (below) was at Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana in 1990.   Spellbinder is only 20 years old,  He had just wrote his first song in 1989, Material Man, which is featured on the new album.  He was at his prime in Skateboarding at this time.  He was traveling to San Diego, California and he also attended a yearly event called "Shut up and Skate" contests.  After winning a semi-pro contest in Houston, Spellbinder was offered a sales job at YAGA Rags (A Reggae Clothing Company)

He moved to Galveston, Texas at this time.  He basically surfed everyday, he lived across from the beach.  Working for YAGA Rags, he was able to travel around and experience a free environment with nice income.  A whole new world of meeting people, developing business skills and when he came back to Denver after this, he ran a Skateboard shop.

This (picture below) was an event that Spellbinder took part in to educate young and old about the consequences of incarceration.  The benefit of learning from one's mistakes was a key lesson.  Knowing it is OK to fail so long as you continue to rise is also a key lesson.  Some of the speakers and performing artists were prison inmates themselves.

SpellBinder is seen here in 3 different newspaper and magazine sponsorships.  Below you can see where he one Denver's best Reggae artist award.  He was a professional skateboarder sponsored by Airwalk Shoes and H-Street Skateboard Company.  As you can see, SpellBinder has a wide range of promotional skills and is known throughout the community.

This was a tribute to the 5th of May, Mexican Independence Day.  The groups that SpellBinder performed with like the Brown Bombers and Soulciety have worked closely with SpellBinder since 1992.  Also SpellBinder did Reggae in Spanish on some songs.  Spanish Reggae, something that can be marketed to even more diverse markets.  SpellBinder has songs in Drum and Base style, Jazz, Reggae, Hip Hop, Gangster Rap, Spanish, English, Arabic, French and the language of Ethiopia which is called Amharic.

SpellBinder performed at the Soiled Dove for this event which was a tribute to the late and great Michael Jackson.  SpellBinder and other artists performed Jackson songs.

Don Carlos is one of the great Reggae legends of our time.  He started in about 1971 as a solo artist.  He then became one of the first originators of the group Black Uhuru.  It was an honor to share the stage with this gentleman.  It was inspiring to see how he worked the crowd, being the elder that he is.

This was an event SpellBinder was apart of in about '03 and '04 with the infamous DJ Lion Dub who started the Unity Party Series which were held once a month all over Boulder.  They always featured different DJs and great music.  SpellBinder always MC'd at the events.

This was the tag SpellBinder wore at the Soul Rebel Festival.  The Soul Rebel Festival is held at Boulder Reservoir each summer by Ujama Magazine.  Robbie Oyugi, a native of Kenya, who came to Colorado about 16, or 17 years ago and started a Reggae Magazine and a production and tour company for top notch Reggae artists.

Performing at the Bluebird Theater.  The scene and the theme was complete skateboard music/punk rock or hardcore.  SpellBinder even took part in the mosh pit.  Five Style Fist performed on stage with SpellBinder.

This was at a time was living in Dallas, TX.  He was working for Fossil watch company as a sales rep.  He took his music from Denver down to Texas, going into different clubs.  First one he went to was called the Royal Rack.  It was a Reggae Club/ Pool Hall.  They had live bands every Friday and Saturday night and SpellBinder DJ'd there every night.  He also did all the sound work.  Here is how he learned how to use soundboards, run sound and work sound, mixing live.

This flier below is from Cal-hari Reggae Club.  It was African owned.  This particular event was a tribute to Garnet Silk.  He was an amazing Reggae artist who died in Jamaica to a fire, an untimely death...

The O.G.S. Pre-Release Album tour at Club Vynll.  This included the legendary General Smiley from the Reggae group Michigan and Smiley.  They were the first two combination Reggae rappers or Dane Hall Singers.  They were known for having smooth and easy rhythmic tones, yet they sang about consciousness and political injustices that were taking place in Jamaica during election time in the early 70's and 80's.

Bender's Tavern was a show SpellBinder did with a company called Help Circle which is a non profit corporation that helps abused women and also helps the arts like poetry and such.  Bender's used to be a hard rock, punk rock club but SpellBinder brought the light of unity and love.

Jessica Kareem is a US Attorney for the United States Department of Justice.  She is a native of Palestine.  She works closely with the US Government preventing honest and hard working middle eastern people from being deported, despite the racial profiling.  An inspiration to SpellBinder for being a person who comes from a war torn country but still rising to the occasion to become a lawyer working in the system for change.

This photo below is of SpellBinder at Flathead Indian Reservation.

The first Mile Hi Medicinal Bash Spellbiner performed at was in February, 2010 in Denver, Colorado.  Spellbinder came together with Sweet Jones and Big D, also, Marijuana Television was there.  About 21 dispensaries were actually there, apart of the event.  This was to promote the legalization and the safe use of medicinal marijuana.

The 2nd Mile Hi Medicinal Bash was in May, 2010.  This was a huge success.
